Reference checks are an important part of the hiring process because they help employers verify a candidate’s experience, understand how the candidate has applied their skills in previous roles and how the candidate would fit into the new team. At a minimum, background reference checks are a safeguard to ensure that the candidate is who they say they are. Employment reference checks can also be used to find out more information about a candidate such as their work style and values. This can help companies decide whether or not the candidate would be a good fit for the role.

feedback, employee onboarding and candidate experience

Many companies consider checking work references to be an essential stage in their hiring process, but there are some companies who view the reference check as a lengthy and frustrating formality. Because of this, some companies only conduct reference checks for senior positions, or not at all. This is as it can take a long time and multiple attempts to get hold of the right person to collect the reference.

These days, reference checks are starting to come back in fashion as they provide valuable information to employers about the candidate that can help inform better hiring decisions and facilitate employee onboarding. Additionally, there are multiple third-party reference checking companies who carry out the reference checks on behalf of employers, saving them time.

Zinc is a reference check company who have developed an automated reference check tool that hiring managers and recruiters can use without the hassle of collecting the references in-house. 95% of work reference checks we collect are completed in under 3 days meaning that companies can get detailed candidate insights faster than ever before.
